Questions

Frequently asked

Will Gnos always be free?

The goal is that yes. The core application reading, audiobooks, notebooks, flashcards, sketchbook will be free forever. Future optional cloud sync and collaboration features may be offered for a small fee, but everything that's free today stays free.

Is my data safe?

Completely. Gnos is a fully offline desktop application. Nothing leaves your computer unless you explicitly move it. There's no analytics, no telemetry, and no tracking. Ever. When optional cloud features are eventually added, they will always be opt-in and we will sell your data.

What file formats does Gnos support?

Gnos supports EPUB, PDF, TXT, and Markdown for reading; MP3 and M4B for audio; and lets you create Markdown notebooks, flashcard decks, and Excalidraw sketchbooks natively. More formats are on the roadmap.

Can I bring my own books and content?

Yes! That's the whole idea. Gnos has no built-in store for now. You import your own EPUB and PDF files, your own audiobooks, and your own notes. Everything you put in stays yours, in your file system, in standard formats.

Why donate? What does it go toward?

Gnos is built by a single developer in their spare time. Donations help cover the cost of signing certificates (needed for macOS and Windows distribution), developer tools, and (most importantly) motivate continued development. Every dollar helps.

Is there a mobile app?

Not yet. A mobile app for iOS and Android is on the roadmap. Sign up for early access or check the About page to follow progress.

Will Gnos ever have cloud features?

Eventually, yes, optional encrypted sync and cross-device backup are planned for the future. They will always be opt-in and will never be required to use the core app. See the roadmap for details.
